WEBCASTING 1001 NIGHTS

Innovative text-based artworks on contemporary events in the Middle East are being webcast for 1001 nights.

In 1001 nights cast, Australian visual artist Barbara Campbell takes the legendary tales of the 1001 Nights (or Arabian Nights) and gives it a twist.

She chooses a key word from media reports on the Middle East each day and uses this to frame a nightly online performance.

Ms Campbell renders the keyword or phrase into a watercolour painting and posts this on her website. Other contributors are then invited to write a story using the day’s keyword in a submission of up to 1001 words.

The first webcast took place on 21 June 2005 from Paris, and will continue for another two years.

1001 nights cast was funded by the visual arts board through a fellowship grant awarded to Barbara in 2004.
