Vale Arone Meeks

The Australia Council wishes to acknowledge the passing of Ku Ku Imidiji man Arone Meeks and pay tribute to his significant contribution to First Nations arts and culture.
Arone was a founding member of Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Co-operative, and former Chair of the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair.

Arone was also an Australia Council peer, an artist, teacher and leading advocate for First Nations people’s health.

In 1989, Arone was awarded an Australia Council Fellowship to study in Paris. He went on to exhibit throughout Europe, North and South America, the UK and India.

Head of First Nations arts and culture, Patricia Adjei said:

“We are very sad to hear the news of Arone’s passing. Arone was a gentle soul and an impressive artist as well as being a dedicated peer for the Australia Council.”

The Australia Council extends its deepest sympathies to Arone’s friends, family and colleagues.
